What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a therapeutic health profession concerned with promoting wellness, mobility, and independent function. The collection of processes that help to attain these objectives is also known as physiotherapy. These processes include among others; manipulation, mobilization, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, ice/heat therapy, and education.
People who practice physiotherapy are called physiotherapists. Physiotherapists are professionally trained experts with the capacity to diagnose and treat injury and other musculoskeletal problems.
When should I see a physiotherapist?
The best way to know whether your problem may need physiotherapy is to discuss the issue with us face-to-face or over the phone. However, there are several signs and symptoms that may be clear indicators that your need to see a physiotherapist.
- If you have a serious or niggling injury
- If you’re experiencing numbness or pins and needles
- If you have a bruising, or deformity such as a swelling on any part of the body
- If you experience postural problems
- If your limbs give way occasionally
- If you need advise on improving balance, flexibility, fitness, or general body strength.
We now offer a free 10 minute phone consultation which allows you to speak to one of our therapists about your individual health concern and to determine if we can help.
How will the physiotherapist help me?
A physiotherapist is thoroughly skilled in assessing and diagnosing cases. The primary motivation is to identify the root cause of your pain or injury and prescribe a course of action that delivers long term wellness. By choosing the right combination of exercises and therapies you can hasten the body’s natural healing process, accelerating recovery. You may also be advised to avoid certain activities until you’re fully recovered.
Does insurance cover physiotherapy?
YES, although you’ll need to confirm with your provider. Most extended health care plans do cover physiotherapy, check your Extended Health manual or speak directly with your HR Department about physiotherapy coverage. If you are injured in an automobile accident your insurance provider will likely pay for all treatment costs. Your physiotherapy bills are also covered if you have a claim under WCB.
Must I be referred by the doctor?
NO. You don’t have to be referred in order to seek physiotherapy treatment. When you suspect musculoskeletal injury or experience any of the symptoms indicated above, you can directly contact a physiotherapist. However, it’s important to check details of your Extended Health plan to see if you need the doctor’s referral in order be reimbursed for treatment costs.
My doctor is referring me to a specific physiotherapist, can I still go wherever I prefer?
Yes regardless of referral details you are free to visit a physiotherapist of choice.
How long will treatment take and how many sessions might be needed?
A new patient will need approximately one hour with the physiotherapist as the two try to uncover the cause of the problem and discuss treatment options. Follow on treatment sessions last between 30-45 minutes. The number of sessions you may need will depend on your condition. At Portland Physiotherapy, every patient is evaluated individually and treatment plans are determined based on assessment results.
What happens during the first appointment?
On the first visit, our physiotherapist will conduct a thorough interview and a physical evaluation. The two are aimed at uncovering your injury history and evaluating them against your current activities. This helps in determining the root cause of your problems and developing an appropriate treatment plan. The evaluation session is usually followed by treatment so that you go home feeling better already. Treatment may involve a combination of educative tips, exercise programs, manual therapy, and modalities such as acupuncture and ultrasound.
How is massage therapy used alongside physiotherapy?
Massage is important in relieving pain by increasing movement. It is a relaxation technique that decreases scar tissue, effectively reducing swelling and edema.
What is ice treatment and how helpful is it?
Ice treatment refers to the application of ice on an injured area. The process has proved to be very effective in reducing pain especially immediately after an injury. Ice should be applied within 72 hours of injury or an aggravation. Place an ice pack wrapped in a damp towel directly over the injured area for 20 minutes every 2 hours until you feel better. You can also use crushed ice.
What is heat treatment and when do I need it?
Heat treatment is the application of heat over the injured area. Heat treatment should only be used in the later stages of treatment when the injury is already healing. As such, it is commonly used after the inflammatory phase (72 hours after injury or an aggravation). It helps to speed up healing and reduces joint stiffness or muscle tightness.
How should I dress and do I need to bring anything with me?
There are no special dressing codes for patients seeking treatment. However, it’s important to wear clothes that you’re comfortable in such as a pair of shorts and a t-shirt or tank top.
